How do I write a cover letter that gets job interviews?

Cover letters are your chance to introduce yourself to an employer. Like your resume, every cover letter you send should prove you can do the job you’re applying for. Include one with your resume to help convince an employer to invite you for an interview!

Here are key tips for writing a cover letter. There are links to more tips and examples in the Learn More section below. You can also talk with a job search expert at American Job Center for personal help: make an appointment today!

Before You Write a Cover Letter

Do some research before you start writing. It will help you come up with some ways you can help it (and also prepare you for an interview).

  • Review their website. What do they sell? How do they describe themselves in their “about us” and “careers” sections? Do they have any press releases?
  • Review their social media posts. What do they post about?
  • Search the company’s name online. Have they been written or talked about in the news?
  • Carefully read the job posting. What are the key job responsibilities and tasks?

Writing the Letter

Now’s the time to use what you’ve learned about the company and the job. Write a one-page letter that shows your interest and sell yourself as a candidate who should be interviewed:

1st Paragraph

  • Say which job you are applying for.
  • Tell why you are interested in this type of work and the employer.
  • If you know someone who works at the company, mention them – but only if you have their permission!

2nd Paragraph

  • Describe how you can help the company based on what you learned about them.
  • Mention your qualifications that are important to doing the job. Do you already have the skills they want? Have you already had the same work responsibilities? Operated the same equipment? Be specific.
  • Provide details about your success in a similar job that match the goals for the job you’re applying for. Maybe you increased output, reduced costs, increased sales, etc. Include metrics such as percentages and dollar amounts if possible.

3rd Paragraph

  • Summarize why you are applying for the role and why you would be a great fit. Keep the cover letter conclusion brief and explain that you look forward to the employer's response about possible next steps.
