Tips for working from home
Remote work is becoming more common. Many employees work from home all of the time (remote work) or part of the time (hybrid work).
These tips can help you succeed as a remote worker.
- Stick to a regular work schedule. Your manager and coworkers need to know when you’re available. Many companies have fixed hours, but some will let you negotiate when your workday starts and ends.
- Set up a workspace. You’ll need a place where you can concentrate on your work and participate in virtual meetings. Find out whether the employer provides any or all of the furniture and equipment you’ll need.
- Get and use the technology you need. You may need to install or update the required hardware and software. Make sure your Wi-Fi or other network connection is strong enough. Learn the technology you’ll use when working on your own and with others. These may include communication tools for email, texting, and meetings, office software, file/data storage, etc. Will the employer provide or pay for any of it?
- Stay connected with your manager and coworkers. Take advantage of email, text, calls, and virtual meetings to participate in projects, ask questions, give answers, and update people on your project progress.
- Dress appropriately. You never know when you may be asked to participate in a virtual meeting!
- Take breaks. Get up to stretch, give your eyes a break by looking at something in the distance, stay hydrated, and eat at regular times. You may want to take a walk at lunch or take advantage of the time you aren’t commuting by exercising before or after work.
- Set ground rules with others in your household. Do you have a spouse, partner, roommate, or kids? Make sure they know when you are and aren’t available and when it’s OK to interrupt you.
